Savannah's Story

Reevaluating and Rewriting

Savannah suddenly and tragically passed away in March 2015, just a few weeks shy of her sixteenth birthday. Her death has made me reevaluate everything, including the memoir I had been working on.

The final chapter of the book won the grand prize in all categories (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry) in the 2015 Pen 2 Paper Writing Contest. I was invited to give a reading at the Alamo Draft House during the film festival. What an incredible experience.

However, since her passing, I've fundamentally changed the focus and format of the book. It is now a graphic novel. One of the chapters won an award in the Pen 2 Paper 2016 contest in the comics category.

It will be the book I wanted so long ago. It is a call in the darkness to anyone who feels overwhelmed, lost, desperate, and alone.

As a member of the disabilities community, I have been recruited to appear on several local television networks, such as YNN (cable news) http://austin.ynn.com/content/top_stories/283799/charity-ride-raises-funds-for-austin-special-needs-school?ap=1&MP4 KXAN (local NBC affiliate), KVUE (local ABC affiliate), and Fox News Austin to talk about my experiences, as well as being invited to speak and read from the unpublished manuscript of my memoir.
